Collection Catalogs

My catalogs seem like dull versions of a good photography book. Rather than publish a heavily curated version of the final portfolio, the collection catalogs comprise a selection of photographs originally set aside from the work, the initial cut or sometimes the second cut of images that I’ve chosen to work from. Collection catalogs are a window into the thoughts of a collection, providing a little more information about the artist, the vision behind the artwork and behind the final selection.

Currently, collection catalogs are printed 4-color, digital offset, and perfect bound with a very small print run. The softcover can fold and wrap around the back of the book, margins are wide for notes directly on the page or bookmarking with a sticky note.

Monographs & Photography Books

In general, monographs encapsulate a single vision, for example an entire portfolio for an artist, an entire collection or series of collections drawn together. I think a photography book serves somewhat the same purpose, but can vary in the range of content and direction. Both publish and hold the finest examples of the artist’s work.

In the case of monographs and, separately, photography books, a commercial printer that specializes in fine art reproduction is used for printing and binding. Affordable digital offset publications are commonly found, while monographs, meant for collecting, can be printed in limited quantities depending upon the project or collection with varying degrees of quality using unique or premium materials and services, and are available direct or from a limited amount of sources. Photography books may employ either digital offset or offset printing to create the published edition, but I think what sets it apart from other books is the amount of attention paid to the selection and printing process, so that the creativity and accomplishment is portrayed throughout.
