Author's Description:
A study of botanical gestures through still photography.
I created Tulips: A study of botanical gestures through still photography, as a small series of informal studies to warm up with while I work with some of the ideas I have for the next collection. I hadn’t planned on releasing any of these images, but I found that despite my rough technique during capture, the photographs are unique and truly beautiful. I will be releasing imagery that I created while working on Tulips in several grouped series over the next few weeks. As I work on and complete them, I am moving on to the next group of images until I begin shooting the next collection of work.
THE WORK
An Ordinary Gesture, is a small study of deep red tulips. During the first day of shooting, I focused not just on the intense red of the petals, but on the bend of the tulip. I selected single stems to create informal, candid portraits. Some portraits are more intimate, others express more distance and area. I pulled several beautiful fine art prints. I converted a few of the images into black and white photographs where the additional contrast in the image appears much more complimentary to the tulip and the composition overall. I decided to shoot again a second day, using one light instead of two, and focused more on the characteristics of the ‘face’ of each flower, where only the face is framed in the image.
